Val was a Navy "W.A.V.E" veteran serving during World War II where she met her husband Duncan. He was a captain in the United States Army serving on the USS Comfort, a hospital ship. Duncan was the brother of Valeria's close friend Isabelle, also a Navy W.A.V.E. Val and Duncan were married on October 30, 1946. Every anniversary Val would state, "I got the treat, and he got the trick." Val also achieved the rank of Chief, in which she performed administrative duties. She was honored to participate in the Stars & Stripes Honor Flight in April of 2012. She exclaimed this experience was the highlight of her life.
