Obituary

Formerly of Muskego and Wind Lake Wisconsin. Thomas Maynard Thompson, age 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at St. Lukes Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 25, 2019. He was born March 23, 1932 at home on a farm near Chetek, Wisconsin, the seventh and youngest child of Thomas L. and Emma (Pierson) Thompson. His siblings Alba (William Owen), Esther (Nelson Flackus), Violette (Conley Mac Adams), Louis (Mary Lou Burgess), Harold (Dorothy Makuch), and Thorvald (Ita Lorraine Baldwin) have all preceded him in death. Thomas Maynard was baptized on July 31, 1932 at Dovre Lutheran Church in New Auburn and confirmed on May 26, 1946 at Chetek Lutheran Church. He graduated from Chetek High School in 1950. On March 28, 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He had a love of airplanes and flying since he was a young boy when his cousin, Vernoyd Keller, came to his grade school and asked his teacher if he could take Maynard (as he was called by family and friends) for a ride in his Piper J-3 Cub. His awed classmates lined the schoolhouse windows to watch them take off and land again. While in the USAF, after being trained at various Air Force schools, he worked as an engine mechanic on the B-29 Superfortress. What a thrill! In 1952 he was assigned to the 26th Air Refueling Squadron at Lockbourne Air Force Base, a Strategic Air Command (SAC) base near Columbus, Ohio. (renamed: Rickenbacker AFB in 1974). While there he worked on the Boeing KC-97 Stratofreighters (tankers) that were powered by four R4360 engines. He was honorably discharged March 27, 1955. After leaving the Air Force, he enrolled at Stout State College (currently the University of Wisconsin - Stout) in Menomonie, WI. He earned a BS degree in Industrial Education in 1959, with a major in Auto Mechanics and a minor in English; becoming the first in his family to graduate from college. While home on leave from the Air Force, his oldest brother Louis, and his wife Mary Lou, introduced him to Juanita Joyce Burgess. It was love-at-first-sight as Juanita resembled his ideal woman - the movie actress Sonja Henie. Maynard and Juanita were married September 5, 1953. He was a faithful husband to Juanita for over 65 years and honored their wedding vow of until death do us part." Their marriage was blessed with five daughters: Bonnie, Becky, Pamela, Jennifer and Erica. Bonnie was born before he began school at Stout and Becky and Pam were born while he was in college, so he also worked part-time to support his young family. After graduation, he became an Industrial Arts teacher at Muskego High School and moved his family to southeastern Wisconsin. His students were in the graduating class of 1960; over the years, he was invited to and attended many of their high-school reunions. He and Juanita made their home in Muskego and all of their daughters graduated from Muskego High School. When he entered the industrial work force, he became a data analyst at AC Spark Plug, a division of General Motors. During his eleven-year tenure (1960-1971), the company became known as AC Electronics and then Delco Electronics. They produced the navigation-guidance systems that were integral to the success of NASAs Manned Space Program during the Space Age. He also worked at these other well-known Milwaukee-area companies as a Technical Writer: American Motors, Harnischfeger Corporation, Cleaver-Brooks / Aqua-Chem, and Bear Automotive. He also taught Auto Mechanics in the evening at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) at the Cudahy Campus. Tom and Juanita worked as co-managers of the Budgetel Inn in Manitowoc, WI for the Marcus Corporation (1987-1989). He worked for Holiday Inn and Eder Industries, in Oak Creek, WI (Tom and Juanita were co-workers again; he tested the circuit boards she built) until they retired in 2001. For Tom, career was less important than God and family. He was an exemplary Christian and family man. After moving to Southeast Wisconsin, he joined Norway Lutheran Church in Wind Lake. He ensured that his daughters received a religious education by faithfully taking them to Sunday school and attending church with them. Beyond that, he ensured they knew he truly believed and he willingly shared the Good News and the love of Jesus Christ with everyone. In recent years, he joined Risen Savior Lutheran Church in Franklin, Wisconsin. Thomas Maynard is survived by his wife, Juanita, and their five daughters - Bonnie (Richard) Post, Becky Thompson, Pamela (Charles) Tontz, Jennifer (Jon) Weisnicht, and Erica (Michael) Swain; five grandsons - Ryan (Rebecca) Tontz, Michael Post, Jeffrey (Christal) Post, Erik (Renae) Tontz, and Jered (Tara) Weisnicht; one granddaughter Jana (Mitch) Hess; and 13 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his dear sisters-in-law (Jane Woodruff, Susan Eder, and Phyllis Schlough) and brothers-in-law (Raymond Burgess, James Eder, and Neil Schlough), and many beloved nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all. A memorial visitation will be held at Risen Savior Lutheran Church, 9501 W Drexel Avenue, Franklin, Wisconsin on Friday, June 21, 2019 from 9:00 A.M.-11:00 A.M.
