Obituary

Sister Charity Keolsch was born to eternal life on November 4, 2017 at the age of 94. She was born on April 5, 1923 as Bernice Keolsch to George and Clara Keolsch. She grew up in Hartford, Wisconsin. She had one older brother who died a few days after birth and one beloved aunt named Elizabeth. In 1942 Sister Charity went to Mount Mary College in Milwaukee which was operated by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. It was there that she discerned her vocation to become a religious sister. For 34 years she lived her life as a Notre Dame sister, teaching school children and taking care of elderly sisters. In 1976 she left the order and with Bishop Leo Brust and later Bishop Richard Skelbas approval, professed private vows and has lived since then as a consecrated virgin. To support herself she utilized her talents to create animal and doll patterns that were sold to pattern books like McCalls. Her passion was helping the poor, especially poor women. She dedicated her life to helping the poor at many homeless shelters in New York, Chicago and Milwaukee until she was 87. During her last years she lived at St. Anns rest home and then later Milwaukee Catholic Home. She never lost her passion to help people. While at St. Anns she continued to help by visiting her fellow residents and writing childrens stories, one of which was published in the Catholic Herald in December 2015 called Papa and the Christmas Tree. Sister touched many people throughout her life with her warm, generous heart and quick wit. She was a joy to all who knew her and truly an inspirational person. Memorial Mass FRIDAY, November 17, 2017 at 11:15 AM at School Sisters of Notre Dame Chapel, 13105 Watertown Plank Rd, Elm Grove.
