Obituary

Sally Gauger Scotland, 71, passed away on February 5, 2025, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Born in Oshkosh, she spent most of her life in Milwaukee, where she built a life full of art, wit, dogs, and strong opinions on Wisconsin sports. She attended UW–Milwaukee and went on to become a masterful artist (Sally Gauger Jensen) with a portfolio that ranged from the uniquely thoughtful to the fearlessly irreverent.

She was also a dedicated animal advocate and loyal supporter of animal rights organizations. Her home was always shared with a rotating cast of beloved pets—most recently Oscar, who, in a dramatic final act, passed away shortly after she did.

In addition, Sally loved gardening, traveling to Cabo San Lucas, and watching Wisconsin sports teams with equal parts loyalty and exasperation.

She was preceded in death by her husband and partner-in-dry-humor, Peter Scotland. She is survived by her brother James (Kathleen) Gauger; brothers-in-law Bruce (Sheila) Scotland and Ian (Mary) Merkle-Scotland; nephews Brian (Jeannine) Gauger, Mark (Emily) Gauger, and James "Conor" (Julia) Scotland; nieces Karen (Steve) Deau, Erinn Scotland, Anne Claire Merkle-Scotland, Aimee Merkle-Scotland, Emma "Jane" Merkle-Scotland, and Maeve Merkle-Scotland; and a wide circle of friends, neighbors, and fellow dog-lovers who will deeply miss her humor, her honesty, and her knack for saying what everyone else was thinking.

A memorial will be held in June in Bay View, the neighborhood Sally cherished. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Wisconsin Humane Society, as Sally would agree they are the most deserving recipients.
