Dick was born and raised on the south side of Milwaukee. He attended St. Augustine of Hippo Grade School and was a 1962 graduate of Milwaukee Boy's Technical High School. In 1965 Dick enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. It was there that he met the love of his life Ngoc "Sue", they were married in 1968. In July 1969 Dick and Sue returned to Milwaukee and began their life together here. Dick returned to work at Evinrude Motors and enjoyed a 30-year career there. He also did TV repair as a second job. After retirement, Dick worked for the City of St. Francis for 15 years. He spent several years volunteering at Zablocki VA Medical Center.

While raising their family Dick was a Scout Leader able to coach his sons Cub Scout Softball teams. He was an avid bowler and for many years was the secretary of his league. Dick was a proud resident of St. Francis and was very active in the community. He was a longtime member of the Jaycees; he was instrumental in St. Francis getting their own zip code and the construction in the building of the St. Francis Veterans Memorial. Dick was humbled to be honored and named the 2014 St. Francis Citizen of the Year. In the fall of 2017, Dick traveled on the Stars and Stripes Honor flight with son John.

In his later years Dick enjoyed traveling with his wife Sue. They went on several cruises to celebrate milestone anniversaries and enjoyed to travel with the Vagabond Senior Group in Cudahy. On several occasions, Dick and Sue went to Paris to visit family there.
