Richard Lloyd Leighton was born in Ellsworth, Maine on April 2, 1934 to Joseph W. Leighton. Jr. and Julia M. Leighton (nee Hanna).
Richard lived in East Sullivan, Maine during his early years. His family moved to Connecticut and Later Madison, Wisconsin. Richard graduated from Madison East High School and the attended UW Madison.
Richard met and married Winnifred "Fritzi" Hoffer and joined the US Air Force at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS. He served as Airman 2C and went on to be an instructor for radar maintenance at the same AF base.
After Richard was discharged, he moved to the Milwaukee area where he found employment with Allis Chalmers, AC-Delco, and finally McGraw Edison-Cooper Power Systems until his retirement in 1997.
Richard is survived by his children; Sherri (Frank) Skuhra, Steve (Karen) Leighton, Kathleen (David) Carter, Debbie Mahoney, Linda (James) Meyer, and James (Darcy) Leighton; his daughter-in-law Dorene Leighton; along with his 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Richard is also survived by his brother, Philip Leighton; sisters-in-law, Josephine Letlebo and Nancy (Michael) Foelske; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and oldest son, Keith Leighton. He is also mourned by his special friend Toni Helgerson.
Richard's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staffs at Milwaukee Veteran's Hospital, Harbour Village Assisted Living Facility, and Allay Home and Hospice for their compassionate care provided to our beloved father.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at Discover Church (formerly Oak Creek Assembly of God), 7311 South 13th Street Oak Creek, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Funeral service to follow at 6:00 PM. Interment with Military Honors at Forest Hill Memorial Park on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at 2:00 PM. Please meet inside the cemetery gates at 1:45 PM. If desired, memorials in Richard's memory to the charity of your choice are appreciated.
