Obituary

Mildred "Millie" L. Verhein (nee Burgert), passed away peacefully April 20th at the age of 93. She was born March 26th, 1928 in Webster, WI to Della and Earl. She married her handsome husband, Kenneth W. Verhein, in January of 1951 who preceded her in death in 1995 and her daughter, Jody, in 1965. Cherished mother of Cheryl (Chris), Linda (the late Mike), Lori (Kurt), Wendy (Darin). Loving grandmother of Jason, Keri (Sergio), Leah, Danielle (Greg), Laine (Steve), Alyssa, Audra, Kendra (Tyler). And Big G to Henry, Kenli, Rylen, Braelynn, Annalia, George, Jensen, Lennon, Laraena and Mariana…. owner of her beloved and "only friend" Cody. Growing up on a farm in Burnett County, WI she was the eldest of 5. Dear sister to Gladys, Bobby, Billy, and Donnie. When Mildred was just 8 years old, her mother died in childbirth. Mildred and her sister Gladys lived with their grandparents while the boys were adopted by other members of the family. As a teen, she moved to the Milwaukee area to live with her aunt where she graduated from Lincoln High School. She began working at Nunn Bush shoes and would often joke that she made shoes for the Pope. She relished in telling the story of how she met her husband, Ken. She ventured out to her cousin's bar alone one night as her friends decided not to go out. Ken walked in with a friend, took one look at Millie, and said, "That's the girl I am going to marry." He bought her a drink and as we say the rest is history. Once they began a family, she dedicated her life to her four daughters and building a home in St. Francis. She lived with her youngest daughter Wendy and her family for over 20 years after her husband passed away. Millie was the anchor of the family and kept the ship afloat for her girls. Doing laundry, cooking meals, and helping with schoolwork, Millie was the stability in the family until her death. Gramma took care of all her grandkids throughout her life. There were many weekends, Summer stays, and sick days spent at gramma's house. Lots of pancakes were eaten! Mildred loved to craft and cross-stitch. Doing many a project for friends and loved ones, even helping with her granddaughters' school projects from time to time. She kept an immaculate house full of chickens and more recently butterflies, hated clutter, and enjoyed watching her game shows and the Milwaukee Brewers. You could always count on eating her German Potato Salad or Chocolate Pudding Cake at family gatherings. Her chicken-in-a-bucket and shoestring potatoes were always a family favorite. Recipes available upon request. She liked her coffee scalding hot and her hot dog's ice cold. She loved to take long walks and enjoyed being outdoors. She never learned how to drive yet was encouraged to get her license often, something she simply laughed off. Trips Up North with the family were common as she loved to reminisce about her time on the farm with fond memories of Aunt Elsie and her cousin Jan. Besides Up North she travelled to Michigan, Florida, California, Hawaii, Spain, and Nashville. Oh, how Mildred loved her country music. You would often hear Kenny Rodgers playing on the radio while at Millie's house.
