Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Mary Ida Mahler (nee Haas) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin went to the Lord on August 7, 2026 at the age of 95 years. Beloved wife of the late Edward H. Mahler. Daughter of the late George W. and Ida Grace (nee Burkhardt); sister of the late Joseph (Joey) and George Haas S.J. Preceded in death by beloved Aunt Kathryn Opahle and Sister Margaret Noll O.P.. Dear mother of five. Further survived by loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, devoted cousins, and friends who became like family.

Mary was a proud graduate of Holy Angels High School. She earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Education from Marquette University while developing treasured friendships that endured throughout her life. Mary taught in Milwaukee Public Schools until the high heel shoes she wore to work daily brought her to the podiatrist who became the love of her life. They married, were blessed with five children, and cherished 55 years of growing closer together learning what it means to love. Because of their faith and value of education, they supported all of their children through Catholic education.

Mary resided in the Bay View neighborhood. She knew every relation in her extensive family tree that was founded and lived for generations in the area. Mary inherited skills to cook for her family, making homemade bread, canning fruit from the trees in the yard, and using root vegetables stored in the cellar. She sustained the family recipes that defined the seasons. Under Mary's care she maintained an impeccably clean and organized home.

Over the years, Mary did a wide variety of extensive volunteering in her parish and the community by tutoring, social justice work, sacristan, various roles at mass, and making communion calls far into her last years. She most enjoyed her time with her husband Ed "puttering" down country roads to explore state historical markers, taking the longest route to visit relatives, and enjoying boundless time laughing at his jokes. Throughout the joys and trials of life Mary carried a strong and steadfast faith that grounded her.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the loving staff at Milwaukee Catholic Home for their compassion, kindness, and patience in caring for Mary.

Celebration of life will be at Milwaukee Catholic Home Chapel (2462 N Prospect Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53211) on Monday, August 17, 2026. The Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:30 AM with the Mass of Christian Burial following at 10:30 AM.

Mary will rest in the hope and promise of the resurrection in the land donated by her Great Grandfather Felix Haas with fellow family members and believers at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery (6124 Highway 31, Caledonia, WI 53405). The Rite of Committal and Internment to follow services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mary's name may be donated to St. Francis Mission, St. Francis, South Dakota. https://sfmission.org/
