True to form, Lorraine won the last hand on a long and full game of life on March 13, 2021 at the age of 90. She was a devoted wife for 61 years to Lewie Kubesh. Cherished mother of Kevin (Sandra) Kubesh, Glenna (Mike) Goodwin and Renee (TJ Morley) Kubesh. Proud grandma of Matthew (Kristen), Adam, Alex (Kaitlin), Nathan and Ian; and Dear great-grandma of Hadley and Emerson.
Lorraine's life centered around her family - she was always proud and interested in all aspects of their lives. Lorraine valued the importance of keeping in touch. In her early years, she was an excellent letter writer -- sharing daily news with distant relatives. Getting the mail was a joy for her -- to learn about others, and to keep 'in the know'. Up till the end, she maintained close telephone contact with many of her cousins and friends. She was able to remember, and was genuinely interested in, the fine details of other's lives, which made everyone near her feel special. If we ever needed to know any information about any friend or relative, Mom knew the answer.
Growing up a farm girl during the Depression, Lorraine knew how to stretch a dollar. To make the most out of Lewie's paycheck, she sewed clothes for her girls (and their dolls!), canned fruits and vegetables, made homemade soaps, found great bargains at rummage sales, and shopped on a dime. She was extreme at couponing and recycling before it was hip! She figured out that through camping vacations, the family could see the country, appreciate nature and enjoy each other's company - all within their means.
Lorraine loved to travel. In addition to frequent trips to North Dakota, she and Lewie took every opportunity to visit with relatives and friends around the country. No matter where they went, the trip was planned to include as many stops as possible to connect with loved ones. If anyone was having a family wedding or reunion - no invitation was required - she and Lewie would be there! After Lewie retired, their travels expanded to include Europe, Iceland, Hawaii, cruises, and Mystery trips.
Like Lewie, Lorraine appreciated talking with EVERYONE. She could strike up a conversation as easily in the check-out lane as at the kitchen table. She was extremely social, which dovetailed neatly into her passion for card playing - and she kept mentally sharp through reading, daily crossword and newspaper puzzles. Lorraine took much pleasure from playing scrabble, boggle and other games -- with anyone who dared challenge her skill!
Lorraine was a great cook. Her delicious meals included the comfort foods she grew up with, as well as traditional Kolache, Rohliky, and Pierogi. At the drop of a hat, she would gladly invite friends over for dinner and pull off a delicious meal for 10, with an apple pie, without batting an eye. In fact, her exceptional muli-tasking skills, her full freezer and her calm matter-of-fact outlook made her ready for any gathering.
Always determined, unflappable, and not easily discouraged even during her fight with cancer; Lorraine was one tough cookie!
Much thanks and appreciation to all the caring staff at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic, Cudahy. Visitation on her birthday, Thursday, March 18, 2021, 9:30-10:45 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, 1023 E. Russell Ave., Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM.
