IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leo D.
Cigale
April 21, 1933 – October 14, 2024
Leo D. Cigale of Milwaukee found eternal peace on October 14, 2024, at the age of 91, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family. Leo was the devoted and adoring husband of Dorothy (née Gittins) for an incredible 63 years, their bond a testament to a lifetime of shared love and partnership. He was the proud father of Karen Cigale of Madison and Rob (Chris) of Oak Creek, both of whom brought him immense joy. However, nothing made Leo's heart swell more than being an awesome Grandpa. He cherished every moment spent with Meghan (JJ) Raap, Lauren Cigale, and Caitlyn Cigale, always their biggest fan and steadfast supporter.
Leo leaves behind not only his beloved family, but also many nieces, nephews, relatives, and countless friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity. He joins in heaven his loving parents, Leo and Jennie Cigale, and his half-brothers Larry (Ruth) Meh and Stanley (Justine) Meh, who all preceded him in death.
A proud patriot, Leo served his country with honor in the United States Air Force Weather Service from 1953 to 1957. His career as a Driver's License Examiner with the State of Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles made him the calm presence friends and family could turn to, always offering a reassuring smile and steady hand when they needed to practice their driving skills.
Leo was an enthusiastic HAM radio operator, connecting with people across the globe. For years, his license plate proudly displayed his callsign W9QMC, reflecting his passion for conversation and connection.
An active and dedicated community member, Leo found fulfillment in service. He volunteered at the Milwaukee County Zoo, worked as a poll worker during elections, and put his skilled hands to use repairing mobility devices at the VA Hospital. His selfless spirit was also evident through his involvement with Bay View United Methodist Church, where he served faithfully as a member, trustee, and usher. There was never a need too small for Leo-if someone needed help, he was there, offering his time, his talents, and his heart.
Leo's journey through life was also shaped by his deep involvement in fraternal organizations. Initiated as a Mason at Lake Lodge #189 F&AM in 1965, he went on to become a respected member of the Tripoli Shrine and Ivanhoe Commandery #24 K.T. He also played an important role as an adult leader in Job's Daughters International, serving as Past Associate Bethel Guardian of Bethel #6 and Past Associate Grand Guardian of the Wisconsin Grand Guardian Council.
At home, Leo found joy in the simple pleasures of life-his backyard garden being one of his greatest sources of pride. Each summer, his garden flourished under his care, with tomatoes and zucchini always available for friends, and fruit trees and grape vines offering the bounty for homemade applesauce, strudels, and jelly. His garden was a reflection of the care and patience with which he approached life.
Leo had a natural gift for fixing anything, from broken gadgets to hearts in need of comfort. He spent countless hours coaching and cheering on his children and grandchildren's sports teams, and when he wasn't on the sidelines, he was rooting passionately for his beloved Brewers and Packers.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Zablocki VA Hospital, especially the nurses of the Hero's Corner (9CN). Leo's playful teasing and good-natured spirit made him a favorite among the staff, who cared for him with love and compassion to the very end.
The Memorial Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, with a Memorial Service and Masonic Funeral at 4:00pm. Please feel free to dress casually, be comfortable and fondly remember times spent together.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight, Shriners Children's Hospital, or the Wisconsin Humane Society (since Leo never met a doggie who didn't need a belly rub).
