Obituary

Kenneth N. Rock of Milwaukee, Wisconsin died Monday, March 20, 2016 at the age of 82. He was born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio on November 9, 1933. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara (nee Kuszewski) Rock, his sons; Kenneth (Penny) Rock Jr. of Janesville, WI and Louise V. Rock of South Milwaukee, WI and also his brother Norton Rock. He is preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Blanche, his brother Wayne Rock, and his sisters and brothers in-law Jean Marie (James) Fellin and Marianne (Peter) Clementi. Ken is further survived by his sister and brother in law: Patricia (Leonard) Fons, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many loving caring friends. Upon graduation from high school in Cleveland, Ken joined the United States Navy and served four years during the Korean War. He completed his services as a Petty Officer First Class. In spite of two formal recommendations to the United States Naval Academy, Ken returned to Cleveland to enroll at Fenn State University. Upon graduation, he began his career as a Field Examiner/ Investigator with the United States Civil Service Commission in Chicago, Illinois. Ken met Barbara in Illinois and on October 12, 1963 they got married. He then accepted a new position as a field examiner with the National Labor Relations Board; the Federal Agency responsible for enforcement of the National Labor Law at the Milwaukee based office. Ken found great satisfaction helping working men and women receive fair and full protection of the law. With Barbara and their sons, Ken volunteered to the local Boy Scouts troop and all the many scout activities. He introduced his sons to the baseball and football games, swimming, ice skating, skiing, movies, excursions to zoos, museums, Disney World, martial arts, family holidays, visiting relatives and friends in Cleveland, Chicago, Sarasota, Las Vegas, and many special places in Wisconsin. As a parent, Ken was committed to a good education for his sons, and with Barbara helped organize the Milwaukee Parents Association for children with Learning Disabilities in 1961. As an active parent group, they joined with many other parent groups for children with all types of disabilities to play a roll in the passage of Wisconsin Law entitled Chapter 115 in 1973, and the passage of Federal Law P.L 94-142 two years later. Ken encouraged the boys to take music lessons. He and Barbara had learned early on to play and appreciate music and the violin. Soon the sound of the banjo and piano filled the house. Ken started as an avid fisherman when he was a young boy and all through his life continued enjoying and exploring the many lakes of Ohio, Wisconsin, and Illinois. He always had in his car his tackle box, rod, reel and net he was always ready for action. Being introduced to deer and pheasant hunting in Wisconsin with two brothers-in-law, he discovered the German short haired pointers. With their bird talents this cut Ken's fishing agenda. With each favorite short haired pointer by his side, pheasant hunting was a special treat in the beautiful autumn in Southeast and Southwestern Wisconsin. It was not unusual for him to find and collect special unique baits, rods, reels, books, hunting items and share stories with other fishermen and hunting friends. A favorite fishing "buddy" Bruce Dethlefsen while designated Wisconsin Poet Laureate 2011-2012, wrote a poem in tribute to Ken which captured the thrill and satisfaction of a fishing experience. After 50 years of service Ken retired. He continued his favorite things and increased his retirement specialties. He always looked forward to that Friday night or church card night "poker game". He loved good literature especially history, mysteries, fiction, poetry, treasuring rare and unique books. Ken and Barbara often referred to by friends as "love birds" had many exciting travel adventures from Sarasota, Florida to Alaska, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston, Vancouver, New Mexico to Mexico, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, to Canton, China to the islands of Java and Bali in Indonesia. They enjoyed Friday night movies, live theaters, plays and the performance of the Florentine Opera. The Kelly Senior Center in Cudahy was the best place for lunch and to enjoy activities with fellow seniors and always the library which was one of the best places to enjoy the afternoon. Between early spring and late fall Ken enjoyed over 30 years of relaxation, games, cookouts, stargazing, walking through the woods, and sitting enjoying the swimming pond with Barbara and the boys at "wind song", their hideaway vacation land in Montello, WI. Ken and Barbara were joined by family and many friends and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 12, 2013 with the renewal of their vows at Nativity of the Lord Parish. After 52 years of marriage from October 12, 1963 to March 20, 2016 most important to Ken was his love for Barbara, his sons and a quiet solitary orderly comfortable home. Ken always had a great sense of humor, usually very subtle but always on point. He usually thought before speaking and left most people who knew him awed by the great depth and value he gave to life.
