Joe was born on the south side of Chicago, raised in Woodlawn and a proud product of Catholic and Jesuit ideals. He entered the Navy after high school and then, encouraged by his captain who recognized his intelligence, used the GI Bill to attend and graduate from Loyola University, where he excelled in mathematics and fell in love with philosophy. Thanks to an NDEA fellowship, he was able to continue his studies in philosophy as a graduate student at Marquette University from 1961-1965, earning a Ph.D.. He then began what would become his life-long academic career at Marquette in August of 1965, where he remained until his retirement in the spring of 1991, rising from assistant to associate to full professor. He also served as assistant chair and department chair from 1974-1977.
Joe had a life-long passion for philosophy and especially for the studying and teaching of Marx, Hegel, British Idealism and Ethics. In the months before his death, he finished two books on the life and work of his dear philosopher friend Errol Harris. He was also a lover of gardening and sailing, art, music, peace and social justice, literature and language, travel (especially to Spain and Brazil), and soccer (Real Madrid), and completely devoted to his family and friends. Joe was always known for his generosity of spirit, his gentle nature, his kindness and care for others, and his gracious sense of humor, ideals which he lived faithfully throughout his life. He was a role model for many along the way. He will be deeply missed by everyone whose life he touched in one way or another, from Milwaukee to Spain, England, Portland, and Rio. He recognized toward the end that he had indeed lived a full and satisfying life, for which he was humbly grateful.
Memorial Visitation at the Funeral Home SUNDAY, September 24, 2017 from 9-11AM. Memorial Services at 11AM. A luncheon will follow.
