John was a larger-than-life character that became a fixture of his neighborhood on the corner of 13th Street and Layton Avenue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He owned and operated his businesses, Speedee Car Wash and Oliva's Garage there for some forty years, and resided with his family at their home within a hundred yards of that same location for the duration. Always full of stories, John attracted a regular audience of visitors that he would entertain with his library of hard-to-believe occurrences and head-shaking incidents. Never one to sit still, John fixed other things in his free time both as a hobby and helping out family and friends. His two prized possessions included a 1929 Model-A Ford that he began restoring at the age of 14 and drove throughout high school, and a rustic log cabin in the woods of Northern Wisconsin. John devoted much of the final decade of his life to caring for his wife Eleanor who suffered from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and passed away in late 2014. John was an active member of his Church community at St. Paul Parish in Milwaukee, and an alumnus of the Milwaukee School of Engineering where he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
The family would like to thank Dr. Steven J. Gerndt and the staff of Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, Dr. Steven Leh, Dr. Jayant Khitha and Dr. Rubina Qamar of Aurora St. Luke Medical Center, and the staffs of Post-Acute Medical Hospital and Franciscan Villa Rehabilitation Center. All of these individuals and organizations provided John with excellent care during the final year of his life.
The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John can be made to the Altrusa House of Green Bay. Altrusa House provides temporary no cost accommodations to those seeking medical treatment and/or their families in Green Bay area hospitals. John's family was supported greatly by Altrusa during his hospital stays in the summer of 2015.
