Born to Eternal Life on Friday, December 14, 2018, age 87 years. Beloved husband of Flormina Vasquez Martinez (nee Zumaeta). Loving father of Linda (Michael Moersfelder) Martinez and Mark (Jean) Martinez. Proud grandfather of Jennifer Zimmermann, Matthew (Allyson), Aaron (Stephanie), Steven and Andrew (fiance Caitlin) Martinez. Great grandfather of Lola, Ella and Charlotte. Caring brother of Nehemias, the late Eliseo, the late Ezekiel, the late Raquel, the late Moises, the late Josefina, and the late Alfredo Jr. Preceded in death by his parents Jose and Ramona, and his wife Maria (nee Macias). Further survived by other relatives and friends.
From 1958-2018, Joel was a deeply committed member of The Evangelical Baptist Church. Joel was a member of the South Side Organizing Committee that oversees neighborhood clean-ups, block watches, distributed information and raised funds that have supported a wide variety of community improvement projects. He was a co-founder of Walker Square Neighborhood Association and has worked diligently to improve neighborhoods so that all residents can live safely. He was a member of the Department on Agings-Latino Aging Network and shared his skills with all participants. 45 years ago Joel helped to establish the United Community Center. The UCC is a center in the surrounding community and a resource of Hispanic cultural arts and traditions for all.
