Joan Beverly (nee Sommerfeld, Boll) Bettin, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sept. 21, 2026, at the age of 88.

Devoted wife of Joseph Charles (D'Amico) Bettin. Beloved mother of Terry Jo Lahmayer (William E.), and Sandy Jo. Grandmother to William J. Lahmayer (Amanda), Jennifer Lahmayer (Matthew Maxa), and Daniel Scott Lahmayer. Great-grandmother to Devon Jones, Rijah Jones, Abigail Lahmayer and Wyatt Lahmayer.

Joani was born on Nov. 16, 1937 in Wisconsin Rapids, WI to Eunice H. (nee Palmquist) and William Sommerfeld. Her father was killed by a drunk driver when Joani was just an infant. Eunice later remarried to Arthur M. Boll, who officially adopted Joani.

Graduating from Lincoln High School in 1956, Joani then went on to attend St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Marshfield, WI, to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a registered nurse. While there, she and another nursing student went on blind dates together. Afterwards, Joani told her friends, "Tonight I met the man I'm going to marry!" The funny twist to the story is that the man was her friend's date! Joani graduated from nursing school in 1959, and she and Joe were married on Oct. 19, 1960, making Milwaukee their home. That union endured for almost 60 years.

In 1961, Terry was born and 5 years later, Sandy arrived. Sandy was born with a severe congenital heart defect and other serious health issues. She had survived 5 open-heart surgeries by the time she was just 13 years old. For 46 years, Joani and Joe cared for Sandy at home until Sandy passed at the age of 46. Eight months later, Joe developed severe health problems and Joani became his full-time caregiver for 6 years (by this time Joani was 83 years old). Between her roles as mother, nurse, caregiver, and hospice volunteer, Joani's life had been dedicated to caring for others.

In her limited free time, Joani loved to work in her yard and flower gardens, making beautiful baskets, crafting with miniatures and a myriad of other things. She and Joe particularly loved collecting antiques, going to flea markets, and hunting for "treasures". She kept a neat home, cooked great meals, worked hard, and always put her family first.

Joani was known for her strong faith in God, positive, hopeful spirit, even in life's deepest valleys. She always believed the best and was not a complainer, often commenting that a sense of humor was essential in life, and Joani had a wonderful sense of humor! Her patience, self-sacrifice, and quiet acts of love to others remains an amazing example to her family. Joani was an incredibly generous person as well.

Her last two years she spent in a little cottage on Rainy Lake on the US/Canada border in northern Minnesota, next to her daughter and son-in-law, who, along with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren cared for her and loved on her as she became very frail and could no longer walk. Joani was an incredible blessing to her family, and her legacy of faith and love will continue to bless their lives.

Joani is survived by her daughter Terry, son-in-law Bill, grandson William Joseph, granddaughter-in-law Amanda, granddaughter Jennifer Lynn Lahmayer and grandson-in-law, Matthew Maxa, great-grandchildren Devon, Rijah, Abigail, and Wyatt. She is also survived by her loving sister, Christine Wasson (Dave).

Joani was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Sandy, parents, grandson Daniel Scott Lahmayer, brother Dan Boll, sister Nancy VanLysal.

Burial will take place Sept. 26, 2026, 11:00 AM at Chapel Hill Memorial Park cemetery, with memorial service to follow (tentatively) on Oct. 24, 2026 at Adoration Lutheran Church, 3840 Edgerton Ave, Greenfield.
