Obituary

Seamstress, slot machine whisperer, and unwavering sports fan, Janice M. Ziemer of St. Francis, Wisconsin, died peacefully Sunday, January 10, 2021, after a long, laughter-filled life punctuated by a five-month battle with ovarian cancer. She was 78. Jan leaves behind a core family of 13 loved ones -- a baker's dozen, in a poetic twist for a woman who couldn't resist sweets -- that she held so close to her heart: dearest Ronald, her husband of 56 years; beloved children Juli (Bill) Hacker, Rob Ziemer, Stacy Ziemer, and Tracy Ziemer (Jay Britton); and the grandchildren who were the absolute lights of her life: Kelsey, Jack and Ryan Ziemer, and Drake, Kaden and Hellena Hacker. Precious Gepetto was her favorite four-legged sidekick. Jan was also a loving sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, neighbor and friend to so many. Born in Oconto, Wisconsin, as the second youngest of 10 children to the late Frank and Helen Bourassa, Jan moved to Milwaukee after graduating from Oconto High School and should have earned an honorary MBA later in life for her notorious shopping wizardry using Kohl's Cash coupons. Jan built a highly regarded career as a seamstress, including working for 27 years for clothing-maker Canvasbacks, and for years sewed quilts for the sick at her cherished Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in St. Francis. Deeply involved in her church, Jan also volunteered weekly at St. Ann Center, where she helped adults with disabilities, and at Feed the Hungry at St. Vincent de Paul Society. Known for her infectious laugh, total adoration of puns and all games, and eternal optimism ("You know, it's better than a stick in the eye" was her favorite comeback to any complainer), Jan kept a very busy social calendar, from regular dominoes games with dear friends Marianne, Helen, Lillian and Sue, to scores of family parties and annual trips to Las Vegas and Maiden Lake in Lakewood, Wisconsin. It always took her 35 minutes to say goodbye and leave any party, and her attendance was delicately coordinated around the playing schedules of her beloved Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks and Green Bay Packers. To know her was to love her, and she will be deeply missed.
