It is with the deepest regret that we announce that Ilona L. Mackey, age 67, passed away in the early hours of September 22, 2021. Her faith in the Lord brought her peace in the end as cancer became too heavy a burden for even the most valiant and resilient woman to bear. Ilona is now reunited with her son, Kevin Hirschfield, whom she missed and loved dearly, her mother, Lilly Scherpen, and her father, Oskar Scherpen. Ilona is survived by her husband and devoted companion, Steven Mackey; her loving children Troy (Shelly) Hirschfield and Stephanie Mackey; and her supportive sister, Brigitte Scherpen. Ilona is also survived by her greatest joys – her grandchildren: Connor, Faith, and Caiden, as well as many more dear relatives and friends. There is no one who exhibited greater strength, dignity, courage and love than Ilona. There was no limit to what Ilona would do to protect and care for her adoring children, her cherished grandchildren, and her dedicated husband. Even in the hardest of times, including the loss of her son and her recent battle with cancer, her ability to provide unconditional love was the glue that held her family together. Her compassion extended beyond her immediate family and encompassed an extended group of amazing people who could not help but love Ilona and hold her in the highest regard. Her kindness changed the lives of others, as her home always had an open door. Ilona will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were lucky enough to have known her.
