Submitted by: Gail Godfrey Sax Arts & Crafts He served years ago to help retain our country's freedom and continues to serve now as a rifle squad member firing the 21 gun salute at fallen Veterans' funerals. With pride and admiration of his patriotism I asked my Dad to write a re-cap of his Marine Corps life. Sgt. Howard M. Weiler United States Marine Corp. 1945-1949 I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in Sept. of 1945. I went to Parris Island, SC for boot camp. We had just finished our training when we immediately got our orders to ship out. Our destination was Norfolk, VA where a total of 5,000 Marines boarded a Troop Transport and headed for China. We went through the Panama Canal and on our way to Pearl Harbor I celebrated my eighteenth birthday. We spend Christmas Eve 1945 at Pearl Harbor. We arrived at Qingdao, China (north China) on Jan. 3, 1946. I was assigned to the 1st Platoon - L Company, 3rd Battalion - 22nd Marine Regiment - 6th Marine Division. Two thousand five hundred of us got off at China, the other two thousand five hundred Marines went on to Japan. Our job in China was first to relieve the Marines that fought on Okinawa so they could go home (they had secured a surrender of the Japanese in Sept. of 1945). Next, we repatriated the Japanese out of China back to Japan. Then our assignment was to protect American interests in North China. I finally left China on Jan. 4, 1948 and headed stateside, arriving several days later at Terminal Island, CA in the U.S.A. on Jan. 18, 1948 where the first song we heard as we approached the San Francisco Bay Bridge was "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover". I was able to enjoy a sixty-day leave to Milwaukee, WI. On March 25, 1948 I reported for duty in Quantico, VA where the remainder of my hitch I trained officers in Platoon Leader Class to be ready for duty in the field. I was granted an Honorable Discharge at Great Lakes Naval Center on Sept. 26, 1949 and returned to civilian life. Soon I signed up again for active duty in Nov. of 1950 for the Korean Conflict but was turned down at the time because of a hole in my left eardrum (from gunfire). Presently, I am a life time member of the following Veteran Groups: The Disabled America Vets, The Sixth Marine Division Association, The China Marine and the Badger Detachment Marine Corps League where I am on the rifle squad. We also participate in parades, civil activities and other U.S. military functions. SEMPER FI Surviving are his present wife Mildred nee Mihelich, 2 daughters Linda K.
