Obituary

Hawley Merle Boyce was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 2, 1928 to Floyd G. and Alvina (Van) E. Boyce (nee Steffen). He was named after his grandfather, a Great Lakes schooner and steamship captain. Hawley sailed into the sunset on August 19, 2022 at the age of 93. Sailing was Hawley's lifelong passion. His parents introduced him to sailing when he was six months old and he continued into his 90s. Long admired for his skills as a helmsman, Hawley sailed every weekend and some weekdays; raced in a Wednesday night social series, local distance races, and the Milwaukee-Muskegon Queen's Cup; and cruised many summers with his family on Lake Michigan. At the time of his death, he was the longest living member (81 years) of the South Shore Yacht Club, which his father helped found in 1913. When he wasn't on the water, Hawley enjoyed watching the boats, freighters, weather, and waves from his picture window overlooking Lake Michigan, South Shore, and the Milwaukee harbor. Hawley left Bay View High School in 1946 to enlist in the US Army and was stationed in Germany. Upon his return, he attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison, earning a Bachelor and then Master's degree in Business Administration in 1954. He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity. Hawley continued taking business courses at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. He joined Red Star Yeast (later Universal Foods) as a financial analyst, retiring as the Risk Manager in 1993. Married just shy of 69 years, Hawley and Elaine J. (nee Wolney) have three daughters, Andrea (Jeff Morris) Boyce, Sharon (Mark) Jeffery, and Amy (John) Odell. Hawley was a grandfather to Steven and David Jeffery and Madeline Odell; and a great-grandfather to Janessa Jeffery. He was predeceased by his grandson, Daniel Jeffery. A private service was held. Hawley's family would like to extend a special thanks to the staffs of Aurora At Home Hospice and Aurora Zilber Family Hospice for their compassionate care. Memorials to the South Shore Yacht Club Juniors program, the Aurora At Home Hospice, or the Aurora Zilber Family Hospice could be made in his name.
The Ship I am standing upon the seashore. AA ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch her until she hangs like a speck of the white cloud just where the sea and sky meet and mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says: "There, she is gone." "Gone where?" Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says "There, she is gone." there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!" -Attributed to several authors; copied from Hawley's grandfather's memorial service in 1944
