It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Harlan Michael Long, a beloved husband, stepfather, grandpa, brother, nephew, and friend. Harlan left us on May 5, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on February 10,1953, in Rockford, Illinois to Harlan and Betty Long, he spent much of his life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he worked for 28 years as a food inspector for the city.
Harlan leaves behind his loving spouse, Christine Long, and his cherished stepchildren, Collin (Stephanie) Donohue and Yvonne Donohue (partner, Mat Dybel). He was a proud grandpa to Jos and Gabriel. He is survived by his siblings, Wendy Long Sams and Shelley Fernandez, and fondly remembered by his Uncle Danny Roberts. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, Harlan and Betty Long, his Uncle Barney Roberts, and his dear childhood friends, Jeff and Joe.
A big guy with a thriving child within, he was known to eat the center of a homemade pie before company arrived. At restaurants, he delighted in shooting straw wrappers across the table, playfully smushing Christine's dessert, or secretly putting salt in Yvonne's water when she wasn't looking.
He enjoyed sharing laughs over breakfast with Christine, often followed by trips to Grant Park to look for deer. A lifelong film buff, he spent many evenings watching classic movies or the newest superhero flick. He had a passion for reading science fiction and mystery novels and was an avid collector of movie posters, comic books, and original pinup art. A lover of all things nostalgic, the Christmas tree always had to be adorned with bubble lights.
Harlan unwound by playing poker with the guys, and his favorite hands were those with the highest ante. He played cribbage often, usually losing. He was a devoted fan of the Milwaukee Bucks, Milwaukee Brewers, and Green Bay Packers. He spent his weekends watching sports, never missing the Super Bowl or a March Madness Tournament.
He wore shorts during the Wisconsin winter, never wore a jacket, and only switched to jeans when the temperature was well below zero. He insisted on filling up the gas tank well before it neared low. He stubbornly lived to the age of 73 despite many believing he wouldn't make it past 50. That stubbornness was his most endearing quality.
Rest in peace, Harlan. Your joyful spirit and love will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew you.
