Glenwood Max Schallhorn
(1934-2021)
In the early morning hours of August 27, 2021, Glenwood Max Schallhorn, cherished husband of Yvonne (nee Wheeler), was lovingly embraced by our Heavenly Father at Heaven's Gate. His beloved mother and father, Lillian and Erich, along with siblings Bruce, Wayne, Adrienne, and Nancy welcomed him home. Though our lives have been forever changed, the memories we have of our dad will always be with us, and we would like to take a moment to share some of them with you.
The Man, the Myth, the Legend
Our Dad lived a rich, full, and wonderful life! He occasionally talked fondly of his childhood, which included hanging out with friends and getting into mischief with his brothers. He spoke little about his time in the Army. The stories he did tell were of his time in the wilds of Alaska: in awe of the scenery and wildlife while freezing his butt off during those long, cold winters. Before his time in the service, he met the love of his life: his "Snookie," Yvonne. On a beautiful, September day in 1958, she became his beautiful, blushing bride. Two young people, deeply in love, began building their life together: one that would last for next 63 years!
"Here Come the Schallhorns!!!"
The first born, Kelly, soon arrived and filled the home with the sensations of parenthood: the sights, sounds, and inevitable smells. Kelly was followed shortly by Dennis, then Tim, Jeff, Nikki, and Jennifer. 9 years later: surprise! Christopher was born to complete our happy "little" family. Glen was indeed a very Proud Papa.
Family was always very important to Dad. Bedtime prayers, hugs and kisses, birthdays, holidays, music lessons and recitals, scouting trips, little league, and graduations: he did his best to attend them all when he could. If you consider that this was for 7 kids, that's a lot! There was never a shortness of love in the Schallhorn family. Dad & Mom made sure of that.
He became an active member of the Wilson Park 4th of July committee, Indian Guides, and Boy Scouts. Beginning as a Webelo leader, Dad worked his way up to becoming the Scout Master of Troop 213 before retiring from the position as the last of his sons graduated from scouting life. Dad and Mom met a number of families and began a camping group that became known as the Family Rovers, and, whether he knew this or not, us kids all felt that they were an extension of the Schallhorn family. Throughout the 70's, camping trips were a welcome sign of summer; where campfire stories were abundant and fun & shenanigans were had by all. These camping trips have become a Schallhorn family tradition which continues to this very day and, even though he wasn't able to attend in recent years, he was always there in spirit.
As the years went by, his little kids became adults and began to marry. Again, the Schallhorn family grew. Glen's moniker went from Dad of 7, to Father-in-law, to Grandpa of 16. Kelly & Joel had Ami & Peggi. Dennis & Carolyn; Asher & Jessica. Tim & Diane; Brad (Claire), Alexandra, Ben & Bryan. Jeff & Kim; Eric, Stephanie & Matthew. Nikki & Don; Donald, Zachary, & Ryan (stepson). Christopher & Nicole; Will, Ellie & Henry. It became time to be a mentor to us as we navigated our own pitfalls of parenthood.
All too soon, the grandkids grew up, married, and, once again, the Schallhorn family grew. Grandpa of 16 became Great Grandpa of 9. Abbi was first (Peggi & Kevin), followed by Owen & Emilie (Stephanie & Erik), Carmen & Brandon (Alex & Andy), Salvatore (Eric & Maria), Freyja & "Baby Z" (Ami & Ryan), Wade & Wyatt (Ryan & Caitlin). Unfortunately, Covid prevented him from meeting most of his great grandchildren in person. However, he diligently kept tabs on them through pictures and videos.
Dad was a civil engineer for the City of Milwaukee for 37 years before retiring in 1990. He was a big time Brewers fan; he and Mom held season tickets for several years and enjoyed spending time together out at Miller Park. He was a paper boy, pin boy, and custard maker. He yodeled and square danced. He listened to Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show. He bowled frequently, and was a part of many teams.. He liked strawberry and chocolate ice cream. He enjoyed watching the Packers; you could always tell if they messed up a play as Dad always made it known to the rest of the house. He never did have a chance to visit Lambeau; it's not like we didn't try to get him there.
87 years of life. 4 generations. What a wonderful life indeed.
Visitation Tuesday, September 7, 2021 from 10am till 12 noon at Adoration Ev. Lutheran Church, 3840 W. Edgerton Ave. Greenfield. Funeral service at 12 noon. Our father will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
