Obituary

George P. George, age 90, found peace on May 1, 2025, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, George was the beloved son of Barket and Nellie (née Decker) George. A proud graduate of GAR High School, he went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

On May 11, 1957, George married the love of his life, Phyllis. They began their life together and started their family in Arcadia, Wisconsin, where George was the owner and operator of the City Café. In 1960, they moved to St. Francis, and built a life centered on love, faith, and family. They were just days away from celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary.

A devoted husband, father, and pillar of the St. Francis community, George leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and compassion. In 1968, he created countless cherished memories and lifelong friendships as the proud owner of Club Bagdad in Cudahy, WI. Known for his warm hospitality and spirited gatherings, the tavern became a local favorite under his care.

George went on to serve his community for over 30 years as an independent insurance agent with Mutual Service Insurance. Through his integrity, hard work, and genuine concern for others, he earned the trust and admiration of both clients and colleagues.

Even in retirement, George's zest for life and sense of community never waned. He brought people together through his organized "George P. George Tours" to various Midwest casinos, where camaraderie and laughter were always guaranteed.

George was deeply involved in civic life and was widely respected for his unwavering commitment to community service. He was a founding member of the St. Francis Lions Club and played a key role in the building of the St. Francis Community Center. His long-term involvement as a St. Francis Lion member kept him active in catering for weddings and events, working weekly bingo nights, and volunteering for various outings and festivities. He also served actively in numerous organizations including the Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, and the Association of Commerce. As a former elected Alderman, George worked tirelessly with government officials to improve the city of St. Francis. In recognition of his outstanding civic contributions, George was named the St. Francis Association of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1997.

His passion for mentorship and youth development was evident in his longtime leadership as chief executive director of the Miss St. Francis Scholarship Pageant and as a state field director for the Miss Wisconsin Pageant. His guidance impacted the lives of many young women over the years.

George's love for his community, his dedication to service, and the warmth he shared with all who know him will never be forgotten.

George is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 68 years, Phyllis (née Puchalla); his loving children Michael (Dawn) George, Judy (Steve) Pfister, Carol Hanney, and Tony George; his brother Phillip (Barbara) George; his cherished grandchildren Melissa (Matthew) LaBarre, Ashley (Nick) Timber, Ryan (Gabby) Pfister, Crystal Knuth, Kayla Knuth, Austin George, Haley George, and Hannah George; and his great-grandchildren Ava LaBarre and Beau Pfister. He will also be fondly remembered by extended family, friends, and countless community members whose lives he touched. George is preceded in death by his parents, Barket and Nellie George; his beloved daughter, Mary Ellen Knuth; son-in-law, Kenneth Hanney; sisters, Marian (Joseph) Sweeney and Bernie (Joseph) Schultz; brothers, Leo (Lillian) and Joseph (Patricia) George; and his best friend, Otis "Bill" Weinhold.
