Elaine Joyce Boyce July 12, 1929 - April 1, 2024
Elaine was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 12, 1929 to James and Anna Wolney (nee Dulak). She passed away quietly on April 1, 2024 at the age of 94.
Family, sailing, learning, and teaching were Elaine's passions. With her husband, Hawley, and three daughters she sailed every weekend and some weekdays; raced in the South Shore Yacht Club Wednesday night social series; and cruised many summers on Lake Michigan.
After her youngest daughter began school, Elaine enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she received both bachelor's and master's degrees. But never one to neglect her family, she taped Shakespeare's sonnets to kitchen cabinets so she could memorize them while she cooked dinner. In the weeks before she passed away, Elaine could still recite a speech from the Merchant of Venice she had memorized in 8th grade as well as several other lengthy poems.
Elaine loved teaching at Cudahy Middle and Senior High Schools. After she retired in 1988 and for over 30 years, Elaine was a member of a Great Books group and later a history discussion group at The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UWM. Elaine also enjoyed watching the boats, freighters, weather, and waves from her porch overlooking Lake Michigan, South Shore, and the Milwaukee harbor.
Elaine and Hawley were married just shy of 69 years when he passed away in August 2022. They leave three daughters, Andrea (Jeff Morris) Boyce, Sharon Jeffery, and Amy (John) Odell. Elaine was a grandmother to Steven and David Jeffery and Madeline Odell; and a great-grandmother to Janessa Jeffery. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Mark Jeffery, and grandson, Daniel Jeffery.
A private service was held. Elaine's family would like to extend a special thanks to the staffs of The Woods A GreatLife Community and Aurora At Home Care Hospice for their compassionate care. Memorials in her name could be made to the charity of your choice.
