Edward Anthony Green passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 13, 2017, aged 95. Preceded in death by parents, Elizabeth (Hofmeister) and Eli Green. Beloved husband of Dorinne (nee Traulsen) for 64 years. Loving father of Erika Linden and Jeremy Jonathon (Diana), brother of George and the late Eileen Kroening. Fond uncle of Tracy Green, Todd Green and the late Craig Green, Sherry Paleta, Victoria Bergeson and the late David Kroening.
Green served in the US Coast Guard as a Carpenter's Mate from 1942-1946, on convoy duty aboard the USS Machias and the USS General WH Gordon. He served in the American, North Atlantic, North African, Mediterranean and Asiatic/Pacific campaigns. He crossed the Atlantic 42 times.
Green graduated from UW Madison with Phi Kappa Phi honors, with a BS Art Education, and an MS in Applied Art. He earned a Master of Fine Art from UW Milwaukee. He joined the Milwaukee Public Museum in 1951, as an artist, then Art Director until retiring in 1984. He was designer and director-builder of noteworthy exhibits such as the beloved Streets of Old Milwaukee, European Village, Hopi Pueblo, Chinese Joss House, Japanese Tea House, Guatemalen Market, Mexican Courtyard, Moroccan Courtyard and the prize winning Conrad Fountain, formerly near the MPM. Green's legacy lives in the many museums nationwide he consulted for and influenced with his innovative approach to "open plan" exhibit design, which then spread to museums nationwide, many times with Green consulting. He designed a Baptist Mission Church in Bamenda, Cameroon.
In 1999, he was honored by UWM with a Lifetime Achievement award. He was the recipient of a Ford Grant for Urban Planning. In 2001, Milwaukee named June 8th "Edward Green Day". In 2012 he won the Frank P. Zeidler Public Service award. He was recognized by the Wisconsin Art Commission for lifetime service. Most recently he worked with the Mitchell Gallery of Flight.
An engaging raconteur, prodigious artist, teller of "sea stories", writer, constant reader, softball player, Badgers fan, dog lover, lifetime Wisconsin resident and general life of the party, he will be sorely missed by many.
