Obituary

Duane M. Nimmer Was born on August 14, 1950 and passed away on August 24, 2018 surrounded by his family after a 3 years battle with heart failure and stroke. Duane is lovingly remembered by his children, Nicole (Adam) Agen and Shane Nimmer (Morgyn Stranahan), life partner Alfie Utrie, and his brother, Dean Nimmer. Duane is preceded in death by his parents Gilbert and Nina Nimmer. Famous for his artistic abilities, skills as an architect, lighting designer, sculptor and inventor of marvelously wacky contraptions he made throughout his life. His sense of humor was a constant strength helping him through life's adversities and endearing him to his friends and family. Duane was indeed ahead of his time with an unquenchable curiosity and feverishly inventive imagination. Never satisfied to lead just a normal life, Duane had a passion to fully experience all that his creativity and imagination could explore! Duane went to Pulaski high school where he starred on the gymnastics team performing the extremely difficult, Iron Cross maneuver on the rings that earned him several statewide medals. He went on to achieve a Masters Degree in Architectural Design from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He spent much of his childhood at his family's flower shop called Nimmer's Flowers, which was located across the street from Leon's on South 27th Street. Duane wore many hats as an architect, designer, 25 years real estate broker, and quirky, eccentric entrepreneur. As an architect, he created the first octagonal boathouse, located on Okauchee Lake and drew up plans for fantastical underground cavern explorations and waterways that brought a river thru a mall that was a tourist attraction and novel way to get to your favorite store. Most of all, Duane believed in the magical realm of play that has no adult boundaries to restrain his ideas about the surreal world where having fun is the main goal! Duane was a teacher in many ways - teaching by example - he challenged conventional ideas about traveling in the unknown vs. staying in our, all too uncomfortable, comfort zone. In the end, Duane Nimmer was a man of principles. And those principles all lead to the art of living life somewhere beyond the day-to-day routine, and celebrate life with an enduring, yet humble, expression humanity. By the way, throughout his life, Duane Nimmer was often mistaken for Texas Ranger, Chuck Norris, and so potential tough guys kept their distance. And though he knew some karate, he never had to prove who he was. A glance was all it took! Memorial visitation at the Funeral Home Thursday, August 30, 2018 from 5-7 PM.
