Dr. George Wen-Chi Hung Passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 26, 2020, at the age of 87. Loving husband and lifelong companion of Shiou-Yin Hung. Beloved father of Karen Hung (Robert Coletti) and James Hung (Wen Lu, DDS). Cherished grandpa "Ah-Gong" of Joshua Jonathan Coletti and Adler Hung. Further survived by extended family in the United States, Taiwan, and Austria. George was a courageous visionary and pioneer. He was born into humble beginnings in rural Penghu, Taiwan. From an early age, George had extraordinary strength of character, deep self-belief, and unwavering resolve. Against the odds, he pursued a childhood dream to move to the United States for his education and a better life. In 1965, George blazed the trail from Taiwan to Alabama. In doing so, he changed the trajectory of his family lineage. George obtained his doctorate in chemistry at Auburn University. He pursued his post doctorate at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. He served many years as a research scientist and professor at institutions such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Clemson University, and later retired from the University of Montevallo. A renaissance man, George was fluent in five languages, loved writing poetry, and relished classical music, gardening. and good food. He was an entrepreneur, tennis fan, and diehard Auburn War Eagle. George was a singularly devoted partner to Shiou-Yin, his wife of 57 years. He loved and was loved by his family and friends. George was the inspiration and rock for his children and grandchildren, focusing on education, determination, and work ethic. He was a fun grandpa who enjoyed being with family and friends, playing games, and watching movies together. George wholeheartedly helped those in need. On occasion, he wore a Superman shirt underneath his lab coat to inspire his college students. George was our SUPERMAN. We love and will miss him so much. Memorial Visitation Thursday, March 5, 2020 from 2:30 PM-4:00 PM at POPLAR CREEK CHURCH, 17770 W. Cleveland Ave, New Berlin. Memorial Service at 4:00 PM. He will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Poplar Creek Church are appreciated.
