(nee Smith) passed after 91 years of living. Born six weeks after the Stock Market Crash of 1929, she was the fourth of what would eventually become 10 children to Luxemburgse immigrants Peter and Louise Schmit. Raised on a dairy farm in Oconto Falls, Wisconsin, all the kids got a pair of knit socks for Christmas, and in good years, socks and a Florida orange.
At 18 she moved to Green Bay to work as a waitress; sending money back to the family farm to help pay for the first ice box, television, and indoor bathroom. In her mid-twenties Doris moved to Milwaukee and began her 31-year career at General Motors supplier, A.C. Delco Electronics in Oak Creek. The first female supervisor in the history of the plant, she was also proud of having worked on the delicate gyroscopes and accelerometers that made their way into the Apollo spacecraft (and on the moon).
But the best thing that happened while Doris was at Delco was an introduction to her soulmate, Donald Ira Strop, whom she married in 1965. After a full career of hard work at Delco and managing their rental properties, Doris and Don retired to Florida in 1986, and for nearly 20 years lived a dream. Doris lost Don to congestive heart failure in 2006 and eventually returned to Milwaukee to be with family. After too many years apart, Doris and Don are together again.
She was generous and gregarious, classy and profane, lovely and loving, down to earth and full of wit, and meant everything to those that loved her. Doris Strop was one of one. She is survived by her daughter Nancy (nee Strop) Pluta, grandchildren Julie Steuber (husband Josh) and Scott Pluta (wife Rosalind), great-grandchildren Samuel and Jackson Steuber, siblings Bernice Mount, Florence Klis, Frank Smith, and countless other nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends.
