Obituary

DENNIS ALLEN LARSEN, 73, of Milwaukee, WI., born Saturday, July 26, 1947, suddenly passed into eternity early Sunday morning, May 23, 2021 from hidden health problems that stopped his heart. He passed on in the home and loving care of his sister, Nancy B. Larsen. "He was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl J. (nee Huissen) Larsen (Oct. 20, 1922 - Nov. 1, 1957), his father, Albert L. Larsen (Aug. 13, 1921 - Jan. 1, 2002), and his step-mother, Carol (May 22, 1921 - Apr. 23, 2005). "The early death of his mother, Pearl, in his 10th year, was the single key influence over his life. He was thus afflicted in mind and joined Curative Workshop sheltered employment in his later teens. He repaired check writing machines for Paymaster and later became custodian of the Bay View United Methodist Church. "A sensitive and friendly soul, Dennis found that making people laugh and find the lighter side of life was the most important thing he could bring to others. People still comment on his quick wit and sense of humor. Christmas was the brightest time of the year and we often joked about having Christmas in July due to the time involved in properly decorating a tree. Considered "slow" by most standards, he was "the world's most patient man," uncomplaining and showing patience to others that they often didn't extend to him. He had a sharp memory and stood before his third grade class to recite all the presidents of the United States through the then current Dwight David Eisenhower. Dennis enjoyed reading, especially John Grisham and Robert Ludlum novels, and dreamed of becoming a writer himself some day. He also liked true stories like The Monuments Men about recovering Europe's stolen art treasures of World War II and about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. In TV and movies, his favorites were MASH, History Detectives, Finding Your Roots, Antiques Roadshow, Ghost, The Blues Brothers, and A Few Good Men. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of music and when hearing a selection of "oldies," he could quickly identify the singers, group, and year. He loved to imagine himself a "disc jockey" at a radio station and his favorite songs were "Unchained Melody" and "Just Walkin' in the Rain," applying the lyrics to himself. He enjoyed sports and was able to figure out and recall statistics on players and teams. He enjoyed weekly outings to play dart-ball with a church league and became captain of his dart-ball team. He was highly skilled and had many dart-ball trophies, some personally engraved with his name alone. "Besides his sister, Nancy, he is survived by his nephew Jeremy P. (Jessica) Haberman. He was special great-uncle to Aaron Michael and Alexander Albert Haberman. In addition, he is survived by Larsen and Huissen family cousins far too numerous to name. He was well-loved and will be missed by many friends and neighbors. "Special thanks to Dr. Richard & Linda Honderick who looked in on Dennis from time to time and Bob & Jean Dienhart for their loving care of Dennis in his final days and hours. "Memorials in Dennis' name may be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness and/or your local PBS television station. A private memorial service will be held on the afternoon of Saturday, July 24, 2021."
