Gall, Dennis M.
Attorney Dennis Michael Gall, born July 21, 1944, passed away peacefully from complications of pneumonia, on April 23, 2016, in Milwaukee. He is survived by his loving daughters, Grace Gall and Lenore Burger (nee Bergstrom), Lenore's husband Lance and beautiful children Benjamin and Madeline, and his sister Marilyn (Dennis) Eirich. His extended family, colleagues, and many friends will miss his company and remember him fondly. He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth (nee Preiss) and father Ralph Gall, and will be interred with them at Pinelawn Memorial Park during a private family service. Dennis was a proud graduate of Milwaukee Public Schools, where he was active in the drama program at Rufus King High School. After graduating with his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Dennis combined love of politics, the law, and his witty writing, as a staff writer and later owner of the Kaleidoscope underground newspaper in Milwaukee (1967-1971), which included his "Funny Judge" columns. Dennis later started his own private investigative agency, working for many prominent Milwaukee defense attorneys and with the encouragement of his mentor, the late Attorney Bill Coffey, attended the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison, where he graduated with honors. After a brief stint as an Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney, Dennis found his true calling, as a Wisconsin Assistant State Public Defender in the Milwaukee Trial Division. There, he found the perfect forum for all his talents, in his flair for the dramatic, knowledge of what constitutes a thorough investigation, writing that was both on point and entertaining, keen legal acumen, and outstanding courtroom skills. Dennis had a passion for the rights of the accused, and served the indigent defendants he represented with skill, respect, and compassion for nearly twenty years, before his retirement in 2008, due to health issues. Dennis was a commanding presence in the courtroom, and often the last thing an unprepared witness would remember, before undergoing his blistering cross-examination, was the sound of his cowboy boots striding across the courtroom well. His memory will be honored on Friday, May 13, 2016, from 5:00-7:00pm, with visitation at Prasser-Kleczka Funeral Home, 3275 S. Howell Avenue, ending with a memorial service at 7:00pm. Afterwards, those who wish to adjourn to raise a glass to his memory and reminisce about his prowess at Jeopardy will congregate at the Y-Not II, 706 E. Lyon Street, on his long-time stomping grounds on the lower east side. Stories for a memory book may be submitted to GRAIRE@msn.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Legal Aid Society of Wisconsin, or the Sojourner Family Peace Center, would be a fitting memorial to his devotion to the less fortunate in our community.
