Having put his heart into the pursuit of learning, discussing and teaching for most of his 83 years, Cy succumbed to complications from Chronic Heart Failure on Sunday, March 20, 2016 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Born and raised in the proud Irish community centered by St. Patrick's Church in historic Maple Grove, Manitowoc Co., he was exposed to the many and varied stories of extended family and neighbors and the immediate family influence of long-time county politician Patrick W. Cavanaugh, which predisposed him to his later formal studies and career. Cy graduated St. Norbert High School in 1952 where he was shaped intellectually and spiritually by the Norbertine fathers, in particular Reverend Alfred McBride, O. Praem. After completing his military service in France, he graduated St. Norbert College in 1959 and attended Marquette University then completed his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1961. His research and thesis on WI Governor Francis E. McGovern was cited in The History of Wisconsin, Vol IV, The Progressive Era 1893-1914. Blessed with a warm, generous nature, Irish wit and humor and a prodigious memory, Cy pursued his labor of love: teaching History and Political Science to college students in MD, IL, and WI over several decades, and enriching the knowledge of all with whom he came into contact throughout his life. This passion was exceeded only by his life-long commitment to correspondence and engagement with former mentors, classmates, colleagues, students, and friends from all phases of his life. In addition to the aforementioned, Cy's passing and loss is mourned by his surviving siblings, Mark (Lydia) Malkowski, Karen Malkowski, Colleen (John Parrish) Malkowski, and Stephen (Cynthia) Malkowski. He is further survived by many cousins, and their spouses and children in the Cavanaugh, Hayes, Kimmel, Malkowski and VanDeLoo families throughout the country.
