Brutvan, Bernette E (nee Willms) Of South Milwaukee, WI, 95, died Monday March 29, 2010, due to complications related to a heart attack. She was born May 17, 1914 in South Milwaukee, WI, daughter of the late John and Marie (nee Kleinwechter) Willms. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from the St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing, Milwaukee, WI, class of 1935. During a USO social at the Pabst Mansion which was attended by Great Lakes Naval Base personnel, Bernette met Fred. She married Ferdinand (Fred) Brutvan, her husband of 66 years on December 11, 1943. Blessed with four cherished and loving children, she was a wonderful stay-at-home mom. Family was priority one.
A lifelong resident of South Milwaukee, she was involved in numerous community service organizations throughout her lifetime. She was a past president of St. John's Christian Women and of the American Legion Auxilliary Unit #27; a member of the Alumni Association of St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing; and past Parish Girl Scout Chairperson and leader. She strongly believed in the benefits that Girl Scouting afforded young women and remained active long after her daughters were in college. She was known to play a mean game of sheepshead.
Leaving behind to cherish her memory are her husband Fred, four children, Carol, F. Martin II, M.D., Barbara, and Ruth (Kevin) Northrup. She is further survived by four grandchildren, Andrew, Aaron, Hannah, and Noah, her godchild Marilyn (Allen) Neubauer, other relatives and friends.
Bernette was preceded in death by her sister, Norma K. Bahl and brother, Jerome E. Willms.
Visitation Monday, April 5, 2010 from 10:00 to 11:30AM, at DIVINE MERCY CHURCH (1304 Manitoba Ave.), South Milwaukee, WI, 53172. Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:30AM. Interment Holy Sepulcher Cemetery. Memorials to a charity of your choice appreciated.
