Alice M. Sopke (nee Lampe) Born to life August 4 1927, Born to eternal life February 4, 2018. Going to reunite with beloved husband of 50 years, Alfred C. Sopke. Survived by devoted son Alan and devoted daughter Nancy Putz (Greg). Loving daughter of Sylvester and Helen Lampe of Bay View, Wisconsin. Also preceded in death by brothers Alerd , Ralph, Donnie, and sister Lorraine Weiland. Survived by other nieces and nephews.
Alice was a graduate of Bay View High School and learned her love of the sporting life at an early age. She was particularly fond of baseball and proved that she could compete with her baseball skills at a high level with any of her brothers and the neighborhood boys. She was infused with a can do attitude. She met Alfred, her soul mate, after he served his country in the US Army in post-World War II Korea. They settled down in Cudahy to raise their family and became integral citizens of that community. Alice was often seen at local Common Council meetings fighting the good fight and lending her voice to the public forum. Alice never lost her love of baseball and served as an assistant coach in the Cudahy Little League to Coach Hank Wardynski. She would fungo fly balls and play catch for hours with her son Alan, and eventual son-in-law Greg. Alice also encouraged daughter Nancy to excel, and enlisted Nancy in community marching bands and many other extracurricular activities. Along the way, Alice earned an associate degree in accounting and bookkeeping. She served as an administrative assistant to the owner of Woodsview Inn, West Allis, for many years. Her knowledge of business and real estate were truly amazing. Alice never lost her love of all sports in Wisconsin. Her favorite pastime was fishing up north where she often cajoled the grudging Alfred into hours of rippin fish lips. She loved everything Wisconsin sports; Badgers, Warriors (Golden Eagles), Braves, Brewers, Bucks, and Packers. She was a superfan who never missed a telecast.
Alices community involvement included mentoring local special needs children in reading and math. She also served as a volunteer for the local hospital. She was a member of the Lawrence P. Kelly Senior Citizen Center. Her competitive spirit gave her membership in the golf league, dartball league, Sheepshead league and the Senior Citizens investment club. Alice liked waking up to a wet nose. She was a lifelong dog owner, trainer and canine lover for many furry fiends from Castro to Hannah. She never missed an opportunity to spend time with her dogs. Pixie will be sorely missed by her family and the many friends she accumulated over the years. Go ask Alice, I think she knows! God broke the mold when Alice was made.
