Obituary

Entered peace into the hereafter on Tuesday, January13, 2026 at age 100 years.

Loving husband of Anni Scherer for 74 years.

Treasured father of Norman (Karen) Scherer and Ingrid (Steven) Richardson.

Cherished Grandfather/Opa of Valerie Robel (Paul Gueller), Julia (Jeremy Affolter), Elizabeth Lemaire, Emily (John Terry) Rossi, Eric (Crystal) Scherer and Blake Scherer.

Dear Great-grandfather/Opa of Gianna and Emmett Affolter, Vienna and Magnolia Robel, Leni and Emerson Terry, and Rowan and Sutton Lemaire .

Alfred was born and raised in Zemun, Yugoslavia where his German Swabian ancestors had emigrated from Mörsch, Germany around 1820 to farm for a better future. He was the eldest child of Klara and Ferdinand Scherer and had two younger brothers, Helmut and Oskar who preceded

him in death.

Music was a passion for Alfred. He started playing the violin at age 7 and eventually played the second violin in the Linz, Austria Orchestra. Later he played popular music at night clubs in Austria, mastering the saxophone and clarinet. He met Anni Schulz in Grieskirchen, Austria at a dance and they eventually married in 1951. They decided to emigrate to St. Louis, MO that same year. After learning to speak English and saving enough money, they built their own house in 1956. They had a nice life filled with lovely beach vacations. Alfred was a good provider for his family and happily retired at 65 as a Tool & Die maker for Intertherm Corp. while also enjoying many hobbies and sports including tai-chi, painting, swimming, tennis and ping-pong. Because of his optimistic nature and outgoing personality, he had the ability to always tell an entertaining story and frequently had a good joke at hand. Alfred was a wonderful teacher, introducing his children to music, meditation, yoga, philosophy, religion, history and many more topics. There never seemed to be a question asked that he couldn’t find an answer for. He later became a Reiki Master and Tai Chi instructor in his community.

He was quite a special man and will be dearly missed.
